Control Arm Bushings/ Ball Joints 700 1989

I'm planning on replacing my ball joints and lower control arm (cone)bushings soon. Since I'm doing both, I intend to remove the control arm and leave the stay rod attached at the top.

Any tips from anyone who's done it recently? How much cleaning of the old bushing remains is usually needed? Is it easily accomplished? It always seems there is something to be learned the first time...
