New Fuel pump and filter, more weirdness 900

Hello -

Concerning my evil 940 wagon, non-turbo.
I recently changed the fuel pump (definitely bad) and fuel filter (ditto).
A number of time since these were changed, I have a strange thing occur, always when the gas tank was getting below a quarter of a tank.
What happens is that as I come to a stop, the engine will falter for a moment or two and then rev up to about 1200 rpms for a few seconds, after which the idle will then settle down to normal. I've also had 3 times when the car has abruptly stopped running - once I had to crank it quite a while before it fired up, the other 2 times it started immediately. Otherwise the car is running fine.
I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the ignition to "run", and am hoping really hard that that my issue is not related to the new pump.
My first guess is the fuel regulator is crapping out.Does it work harder when the tank is low? Or maybe the throttle body is dirty?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
