Recently purchased a '89 240 wagon that has been giving me fits. The car was originally sold in Canada but I don't see any difference between it and other 89 - 90s that I have looked at, other than the speedometer is in kilometers.
It has a normally aspirated B-230 motor. The car would start and idle fine but was very sluggish on acceleration and would die and refuse to re-start after warm-up. It would re-start after sitting a few hours. Fuel pressure was in the 40 psi range and I did have spark. Two exhaust studs were broke on #4 cylinder and it had a pretty good exhaust leak there. From the beginning I could smell gas fumes and figured it was running rich. I have confirmed rich running by looking at plugs in no-start situation and can see fuel on plugs. Listed below is what I have done so far.
- Looked at Air Mass Meter and installed new air filter. Un-plugging AMM makes no differance.
- Looked at throttle body seems pretty clean
- Replaced knock sensor with one from junk yard
- Replaced flywheel sensor with one from junk yard
- Replaced coolant sensor to computer with a new one
- Replaced ignition module (power stage)with a known good one
- Replaced fuel presssure regulator with a known good one (in frustration)
- Replace dist cap and rotor with new ones (in frustration)
- Removed broken exhaust studs and replaced exhaust manifold with one from a '88
that has O2 sensor located in the manifold instead of on the Cat like original
The manifold and O2 sensor came from the junk yard.
Now I've been trying to start it with only the exhaust manifold on, and the Cat (and original O2 sensor) and front muffler removed from car. The car is still running rich and will only fire if I pull plugs and dry them off. It is equipped with the cold start injector which taps into the bottom of intake manifold. I have tried to pinch off fuel line to that injector as well as un-plugging it. Does not seem to help.
I tried to fix this with a lot of reading of 700 FAQ but now I need to ask all off you that have been so helpful to me in the past. Thanks in advance for your thoughts/comments.
P.S. When I do get it running I will want to change speedo to American. Will I also need to change sender in differential?? Thanks again
