As I mentioned a while back, I picked up an '88 244 in late November with a dirty 25A fuse and have made use of it over the past two months as an extra car for around town and long hours at the office on my current project. The LH rear door is nicely stuck in place.
At first, I that the exterior handle was out of adjustment and perhaps the child lock was on inside. Not a problem - bent a stout coathanger into shape, rolled down the window and went to work. After more effort than I care to admit, I gave up on that effort. I turned my attention to removing the interior panel.
Off came the easy bits to remove and I was left with the panel. Had to remove the rubber door moulding, the plastic threshold moulding at the bottom, and other bits as I attempted to get at the innards. Initial efforts to remove the panel were unsuccessful so I shifted my attention elsewhere.
I disconnected the hinges from the B-pillar in hopes that I might be able to pop the latch - no luck. Hinges were reattached.
Spoke with the local volvo doctor and he said apply extra force to the top of the door panel where the two lips that sit in the window channel are - they can be bent back into place on reassembly. Sure enough, with more force that I thought was reasonable, the upper portion of the door panel pops off and with some wiggling, the panel is now removed and the mechanism is accessible.
I take a look, set the child lock to allow the door to open and... nothing. I've tried lubricating the assembly and applied penetrating oil from both within and without. I've manually raised and lowered the lever to release the latch in combination with a few good thumps to the inside in hopes of popping the door open, to no success. At this point, I'm not sure what else to do.
Both of the door latch mechanisms - the latch and the bolt - are removed while the door is open, so I don't believe that there is room to disconnect either.
Should I just apply more penetrating oil and wait?
Is it possible to trip the latch through the small, rectangular opening visible through the door gap from outside the car?
Thanks -
Zach
