stupid short term solution? 200 1988

I'm certain that the crankcase ventilation system is not working on my recently purchased 240. I have ordered a flame trap, the housing, as well as the 3 hoses (because they don't look great). In the meantime, is it stupid to drive the car using the oil filler cap from my 1971 144? The old oil filler caps have an attachment at the top for a hose to release excess crankcase pressure. Will I end up with engine oil sprayed all over the underside of the hood?
