should there be play in the rear differential? 200

When I hand turn the drive shaft I get about a 1/2 inch or more of a turn from the differential. This is the problem I've been having when accelerating after taking the foot off the gas and coasting in a low rpm. So when I resume giving the car gas it has a bit of a clunk the car moves front to back rocking motion. The sound is heard in the rear. Thought it was the rear u-joint but I just finally turned the driveshaft and found the play was in the differential.

I was thinking that the driveshaft should be firm without the ability to turn it without the differential turning. This problem has been with the car since I bought it but finally have worried enough to fix it. I hate u-joints in other words.

New rear end?
