Wagon tailgate latch spring? 200 1990

So my 240's tailgate latch has stopped latching. I can just pull it open with out having to press the release outside or pull the handle inside. I think a piece of a spring came out one day and thats when it gave out. The spring that returns the handle/button is working fine, but the actual latch piece (that locks onto the tailgate's pin) isn't sticking in open or closed position. I can just move it with my finger. I messed with the mechanism inside and found that if I push a lever in the latch system it will stay latched or open. I'm guessing thats where the spring is supposed to go.
Does anybody have knowledge of this or have an exploded view of the parts? I just want to know where I can get another spring or what kind of spring so I can go to the hardware store and find something that works. Also which parts does the spring connect to? Is it a compression spring or a tension spring?

I put a picture of the latch taken from the drivers side of the tailgate.
