Odometer preset mystery 200 1989

1989 245 with 157,800 on the odometer. The other day I removed my instrument cluster to check the speedometer connection in an attempt to solve my 3-1-1 code and I discovered this sticker on the back of the odo.

It reads "The mileage on this unit was preset to 356,268 miles by VDO on 3/97"

Why would my odometer read what it does? I do have a hunch, based on VIN records, that my car sat dormant from about 1997-2002.

Has anyone encountered these stickers before? VDO makes gauges do they not? Also, can someone tell me what's up with all the writing using a sharpie directly on the back of 240 odometer gauge where it sticks out of the back of the circuit board? Mine's got "370" hand written on it. I've seen others with other numbers.
