Sound system / radio 'OFF' 900

I'm the second owner of a 1996 Volvo 960. Last weekend I had an episode of electricus interuptus and of course the anti-theft thing on the radio called for code to get working again. I punched in the code off the code card I found in the glove compartment but it didn't work. While I was on hold with the Volvo dealership, I kept at it and tried the same code again and suddenly the radio just said 'OFF'. Turns out the radio must have been changed at some point in time and the dealership ultimately gave me the correct code for the radio. However, I can't get anywhere with the radio in 'OFF' mode. The very helpful and dedicated parts man in the dealership told me that this happens when the wrong code is entered repeatedly (I guess sort of like a double anti-theft feature!), and if I drive the car for ~ an hour it should revert to reading 'code', at which point I can enter the correct code and I'll be good to go. Problem is, I've driven for over 4 hours now with no change in radio status. I even disconnected the radio entirely to see if that made a difference and, no, it hasn't.

The radio is a 'Premium Sound System' stock Volvo radio for the 960 (with CD player). Any help on how to rest this back to 'code' will be appreciated.

Many thanks,

KaiS
