Average Life of an Air Mass Meter 200 1992

Hi, my wife has a '92 240 sedan.

Very recently, her car had a real hard time starting and would stall out when coming to a stop. The only way I got it to the shop was by putting it nuetral at stop lights and throttling her a fair bit.

Initially, the mechanic feared it was going to be the air mass meter/air flow box or the throttle position sensor, but it ended up being just MINOR holes in the vacuum lines. The mechanic had me scared because he was telling me that they are a $500 part...then labor.....I believe I have seem them for MUCH less though!!

She's running fine, but it got me thinking about what I am staring at if I need to replace the AMM? It was last replaced at 137k and the '92 now has 161k (24k miles ago)

Would anybody be able to tell me if there are:

- Any 'tell-tale' signs that the AMM is on it's way out?
- If there is a typical mileage amount that they last for?

I may look into buying a slightly used one in the aftermarket to have her ready. Not even sure which AMM model I would need though.
