Hi Dave,

someone mentioned two relays

There are two relays inside the single box. This will become more obvious if you take the cover off.

To run the pumps by the jumper wire (or by holding down the clapper of one of those two relays), you don't need to have the key in the ignition, or listen to that ding ding. In the later cars, the door switches can be pushed and turned to the right to lock them in - a nice feature to get rid of that annoying chime while you're working on stuff.
