Little gear in odometer. 200 1990

The speedometer/odometer was working only sporadically so I checked where the wiring goes to the rear end and all seems well there. Then I took out the insstrument cluster and gently sanded all the connectors and applied a little dielectic grease to each one.
Still the speedometer/odometer work only sporadically and unpredictably.
Could it be the little plastic gear in the mechanism? I've read that they can wear out or give way and cause problems. Are the symptoms described consistent with problems with that gear? Is it a difficult DYI fix?
