Hi Don,

No, the difference between the temp needle just below, at, or above the gauge midline is irrelevant to what we're discussing: any reasonably warm engine temperature reflects sufficient coolant heat to operate the heater.

Even at a high gauge reading, turning the heater valve off should completely block coolant flow through the heater core. Thus, the temp gauge reading doesn't matter. I still think the valve is defective because it's not blocking coolant flow.

You have a 122? I'd expect it has the same type of manually-operated valve to control coolant flow through the heater core.
