Hi Don,

Do I understand you rightly? You've had a new heater control valve replaced by a Volvo dealership tech, the cable is bottoming in its travel to close the valve, and it is still getting hot in the car? Is this a metal valve with the capillary tube feedback?

My recent belief is Volvo has been substituting the plastic valves used in the 93 production 240s (simple, non-feedback valves) because the Ranco type were no longer available.

If you have the good valve (metal, thermostat type) it may just be out of adjustment. There's a small cam moved by a Torx screw that adjusts the influence of the wax motor in the thermostat portion. Volvo's A/C manual suggests turning it some:

"Warm up the engine.

Move the heater control to off (closed) and check that the input hose from the engine to the heater control valve is cold. If not, turn the adjuster screw (arrowed) 3/4 turn clockwise."
