psychotic speedometer 200 1990

The speedometer psychosis started a couple of weeks ago…works, does not work, works again, does not work again. No rhyme or reason… pops on, then flops to zero for a while.
I took out the instrument cluster and cleaned all connections and applied dielectric grease.
Then I disconnected the pigtail from the rear-end and soldered the connectors. It worked for a while, then flopped again. Once in a while it surprises me and pops on, but only for a short time.
Basically the same on and off pattern.
Could it be the connector INSIDE the switch on the differential? What’s the deal with that hockey puck shaped mechanism? It looks rusted on there. How do I get it off and am I likely to find anything to “fix” in there?
Thanks.
