I have a Wal-Mart EverStart battery and the postive post has that bluish white corrosion growing on it, well, not on the post itself but more on the clamp. Using one of those felt pads doesn't seem to work in preventing the corrosion. So in the past I would do a cleaning by dipping the positive clamp in a baking soda solution. The drawback of this is that it would eat at the metal clamp. After some time the clamp got so corroded that I wasn't able to unclamp it and had to chip away at the corrosion and vacuuming it away. Then I tried slathering it with dielectric grease. Still the corrosion came back until recently it loosened the clamp and my car had no power to start. Since the clamp was loose now I could just slide it off to clean it. After cleaning it with baking soda solution, I noticed that that corrosion ate through the clamping bolt, hence the loose clamp.
I took out the battery and noticed that the positive post did not sit flush with the battery. There seems to be an opening where there isn't on the negative post, which looks to be sealed. Is this the cause of the corrosion?
I plan to get a new battery this week and see if I can reuse the positive clamp using a new clamping bolt. If not, I have a new clamp, which I dread having to put on. How do I even remove the old one?
