Low Friction Engine 200

I understand that starting in 1985, Volvo produced what is called the Low Friction B230 engine for 240s,and that it was the design used until production of the 240s stopped in '93. The rods were made longer and thinner, the bearings were smaller and lighter and a few other things. In 1989, they beefed up the rods and bearings. It seems that the engines from 1985 to 1988 therefore were perhaps not up to the standards of the earlier B21 and B23 engines? Would like comments please
