new valve cover gasket, engine had a bad skip, now dead 444-544 1956

On to my second battle with the 444.
Yesterday I changed the belt, valve cover gasket and wrapped the exhaust.
Then immediately after that, there was a big, noticeable skip in the engine.
Got worse and worse, basically car is not starting. Cranking fine, plenty of fuel in the filter. My guess, the new cork valve cover gasket is junk and leaked. Does that sound possible? Can't get to the car for a couple days.
Thanks for putting up with me guys.
