leaking Master Cylinder, 940

As part of a brake system cleanup and overhaul, I pulled the reservoir from the master cylinder, in order to clean out the accumulated crud inside. When I reinstalled it, I could not get it to seal completely. On re-removal, I found one of the two sealing grommets was slightly torn. I ordered new ones, which arrived and were installed today. Now I find these new ones have not stopped the leak. Is there a correct way and an incorrect way of installing these rubber grommets? Should they be installed into the M/C first, then the reservoir pushed into them, or should they be installed on the reservoir first then pushed into the M/C? Any advice on what is going one here? The M/C did not leak before I removed the reservoir the first time.
