A/T seperated before engine removal? 700

I pulled the motor and trans (bad A/T) as a unit from an '86 765T (10K on rebuilt).
I'm putting the motor in my 745T...(223K and sounds like a diesel)
? is, does the trans and motor HAVE to be removed as a unit, or is there an easier way?
TIA btw anyone know what "piston slap" noise really is?
