1993 240 Charging Problem 200

My son's 240 died on the road, lights dimmed, radio went off, etc. The battery light was not on. I changed the battery. Car now runs but I put a multimter on the battery and voltage does not rise as car is running but drops from 12.6 with no load to about 12.4 with car running. All the idiot lights on the instument panel are working. Put multimeter on +Ve terminal on alternator with car running and got 16 volts or so. With car not running same place has 12.5 volts, so that wire is good. Checked ground to alternator, that wire is good also. I removed alternator and bench tested it at the auto parts store, it passed the test. So I guess I'm now down to the little red wire. Anyone have any idea of a good test for this?
Thanks,
Jerry Barth
