Told me oil pressure was OK, now I need an engine NE Ohio 700 1990

'90 740 Turbo - I hadn't driven this car much since I got it because the oil light would come on after 20 min. or so on the highway (not noisy though), so I would rest it for awhile before continuing and put very few miles on it. I replaced the sending unit to no avail. One guy suggested it was probably the oil pump but didn't do any tests. I finally took it to a place that said oil pressure is good, that it must be electrical. I then took it on the highway and after 30 minutes or so the engine started clattering - now it's toast.
So did I get a bum steer, or would the engine need replaced anyways even if it was the oil pump? Thanks. (I put an ad in classifieds for an engine).
