Whining noise at specific rpms 700 1990

Hello folks...first post here so I hope I am using the proper forum and etiquette.

I've searched the archives and may have a hint as to my problem, but it doesn't exactly match up to what I've found, so I would appreciate your wisdom. Here's the deal:

1990 745, 143,000 miles. Always has had the recommended maintenance. It's in great shape mechanically and cosmetically. Recently the car has been making a whining noise that occurs only between 1500 and 2200 rpms. It happens in forward and reverse. Sometimes there will two whines of different but harmonic pitches. It will happen under way if I shift into neutral. Maybe 10% of the time the noise will not happen. It will not happen while stopped and reved in neutral.

What it's not: wheel bearings, alternator, belts, exhaust leak, vacuum leak.

Any ideas? Thank you for your time.
