door latch problem 444-544

Closing and opening my doors is going from bad to worse. (Actually opening them is the problem; they close just fine). I think that the problem is related to the strange screw/washer combination that holds the door lock mechanism to the inside at the end of the door. There is a cup shaped washer that on my car is too small and therefore keeps sliding through the hole in the door. A flat washer won't work because the screw head will protrude out too far and hit the door jamb on the car. Is there a specific part for this or a more generic solution? Also, I've noticed a slow creeping in of the dreaded handle droop... Any suggestions?

Thank you much.
