Volvo 240 speedometer problems 200 1990

About a month ago my speedometer and odometer started acting very erratic in an on and off manner. I read up on it on the Brickboard and learned that the problem was in the wire clip on the rear end. So I took the clip off and did a little rewiring and soldering of the wires. I wound up putting it back together by putting the clips directly onto the rear end fixture (sorry I don't know the names of all the parts) without the housing and put some silicon in the rear end part of the clip to hold the wires on. In other words I took the females out of the housing they were in and put them directly on the males in the rear end housing.
Anyway, it worked for a day or so and now it's back to the erratic pattern. I'm nearly ready to go to the junkyard to get a "new" cluster and a "new" clip and install them together.
By the way, how would one remove that round thing that the rear end clip sits on?
What course of action would you recommend?
Thanks,
