car just stops running 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 GL wagon with 165K on it. Very well maintained by Dyer and Dyer Volvo in Atlanta. When I am driving it randomly just stops...I put it into neutral and it immediately restarts and off I go. There is no rhyme or reason to when it does it. Fuel is 1/2 or full tank. Fuel filter under car is new. All scheduled maintenance has been done. There is no loss of power, rough idle, etc.

One clue: recently I overfilled the tank for a mileage check and I noted that the fuel guage became "stuck" at full for about two weeks. Then, all of a sudden it started to work again.

There is no warning, the engine just sort of fades away and the idiot lights come on. Outside air temperature has been in the 80 degress F. I use a can of Seafoam fuel additive once a month.

Any ideas for a systemized way of trouble shooting this as opposed to just replacing parts? (fuel relay, sender, intank pump, crank sensor, etc.)

Thanks, Frank
