'85 240 bucking and backfiring 200 1985

driving home yesterday afternoon in the pouring rain my car began chugging then died
restarted, made it a half mile then it died and would not restart
towed it home, let it sit a few hours after it stopped raining
it started but still bucked and backfired, and could not handle doing any work when put into drive and died

the timing belt is intact and the marks on cam seem to match up with crank, at least on a cursory glance in semi-darkness

he timing belt and all maintenance is within standard intervals, wiring hanress has been replaced, hall sensor, spark plug wires, coil, cap and rotor replaced 25,000 miles ago - 348,000 miles on ODO

it seems to be related to ignition somehow - perhaps the timing is off or i need to look for spark, going to check cap and rotor - will check that all mechanical timing indicators are accurate and not a slipped crank pulley from decayed rubber (new pulley 7 yrs & 200,000 miles ago)

any ideas for other things to look into?
