Cable Gauge? 200 1986

Hello All,

I'm planning on replacing both of my battery cables, and I'm considering an upgrade while I'm at it. Several questions keep nagging at me:

1. What would be considered an optimum gauge for both cables? I'd like 'em to be heavier than stock, but I don't want to cook anything prematurely.

2. I've read that the negative can be a smaller gauge than the positive. But should it be? That would seem to defeat the whole purpose, wouldn't it?

3. Should I build these myself, hire someone, or buy them pre-made?

The vehicle is barebone stock, with the exception of E-codes and a high-voltage conversion harness from Susquehanna Motorsports. All is well at present, but battery is eight years old with cables much older!

All ideas appreciated, with my thanks,
Brendan.
