typical failure of air recirculation door ? 200 1987

I'm getting a cold draft on my feet. I suspect that the air recirculation door is partialy open. What part usually fails in the system, i.e switch, vacuum line, vacuum actuator ?

If it is the vacuum gizmo that works against the sping, do you really have to remove the engine and cut a hole in the firewall to fix it ?

Thanks

Greg
