940 wagon engine fails 900 1993

the car ran fine on a trip down south for over 500 miles with out any engine problems. then the car developed a problem with the engine . it would start loosing power and the engine would feel like it was miss firing and would stall out all the lights on the dash will come on. after sitting for 10 min. it would start again, i found that flushing out the air inlet pipes with open pipes you can flush out smoke from the air inlet piping. what else can be the problem. thanks RICH
