Okay, I'm looking for some information and opinions here. First, I was wondering what automatic trans. I have in this '93 244 car. I was told by one Volvo mechanic that you look at the aluminum data plate on the left side of the trans. So I did and it says "30-70". Up above that cast into the casing it says "30-71". Since it says the manufacturer is Aisin AW I'm assumung it an Aisin Warner. But is it an AW-70 or an A71? Now for the opinion part of my thread. I pulled the engine and trans. out of the car because the engine had thrown a rod through the side of the block (from the P.O. of course). I'm rebuilding another B230 for it and since I had the trans. out I thought I'd replace the input and tailshaft seals as well as a pan gasket and filterkit. I also thought I'd like to get the greasy thing cleaned up and painted so it all looks nice going back in. So I took it to a recommended local trans. shop for an estimate to do all of the things I just described. I figured that they probably had a tank they could drop it into and it would get all the grease and gunk off of it and it shouldn't be too much to install those 2 seals and the filter and pan gasket. I dropped it off and the guy said he'd call with an estimate. When he called me back, he told me that there were alot of metal shavings in the pan as well as the oil smelled like it was burnt. And so he recommended that I have it rebuilt for the tune of somewhere $1500. I told him that if it was that bad that I would just find another trans. for it before I dropped that much into it. He then said we could go ahead and clean it up for you and you could hope for the best with it because you'd probably be in the same boat with another used one so I might as well have them do the seals and cleaning. I had them leave the pan off and went down to the shop to see how bad it was. The magnet that was in the bottom of the pan was covered in that dark grey paste that I've seen in just about every trans. pan I've ever pulled. No big pieces or chunks. The fluid did look black though. After telling them I'd rather do it myself rather than pay them $215 to do it they reduced their price to $160 (to clean it and install the seals, etc.) I thanked them for their time and information and took the trans, home so I could do it. Do you guys think like I do where they were trying to get me to spend money unnecessarily? I was told by the P.O. that the trans. worked fine on the car but I take that with a grain of salt. At this point I believe that I'm going to change out the seals and filter/pan gasket and go with it. I mean I've got 325K on my '83 245 and the auto trans. works great. What do you all think? Sorry for the "Novel" style post. Thanks in advance.
