Justified modification or grievous sin? 200

RE: 1988 245 wagon. Issue: I am sooo tired of having to remove the insulation panel to reset the orange "service" light. Am I correct in assuming on an 88 240 series vehicle it is mileage based and not condition based meaning it goes on every XXXX miles regardless?

Question: Is it a "sin" to just remove the bulb once and for all? Will removing it trigger the resistance based bulb-out warning light?
