instrument cluster removal 200 1979

As far as the speedo tamper lock--if it has already been broken off you'll be able to grasp the cable retainer ring and turn it with your fingers-about a quarter turn counter clockwise-to release the cable. If the lock is still there it will have an outer ring which can be snapped off with a small screwdriver--then the rest of it will fall away from the cable retainer. Remove the steering column trim behind the wheel to expose the two cluster retaining screws. The cluster is held into the dash with a couple of spring steel clips at the top. It take a fair amount of pressure to push the top out towards the rear and to save knuckles from getting smashed I work from the driver's seat and pry them out levering a good sized screwdriver against the underside of the dash "hood"--the blade inserted between the hood and the cluster top. It seems like a violent and crude thing to do but the cluster will pivot at the top--I've never damaged the hood or a cluster with this method. Once the cluster is angled out you can remove the harness connections. I like to put a few holes in the tinted strip at the top to make the instruments brighter. There are 3 bulbs on a harness-inserted into spring clips-above the cluster. Now would be a good time to add a tachometer if you don't already have one--only one wire to run. -- Dave
