Loose Steering, Pulling 900 1995

1995 945, 225k miles.

I gave this car to my wife four years ago and have been driving a 122/240/c70/Moped since.

I occasionally drive her car and I have noticed an alarming gradual change in the steering characteristics. Generally the steering has begun to feel "loose" and it has started to pull to one side. It has had no accidents or other problems that would screw up the alignment abruptly.

As soon as I noticed the pull, I put the car up and checked the front steering. I found the outer tie rods were very worn. I replaced them immediately and found this changed nothing in the performance characteristics.

The inner tie rods have no excess play. The front bushings and fine. The brakes are fine - showing no excess wear or symptoms of caliper binding. The only thing I've not really serviced or replaced are the struts and strut mounts. I'm not sure they could be causing these symptoms.

I recently did a front strut job on a 240 and rebuilt the front suspension on my c70 so I am capable. However, I'm not in a position to start replacing parts without some sense that it will correct the problem. With these high miles, I do not want to keep throwing hundreds of dollars for parts at suspected issues when perhaps I should just buy a newer, safer volvo.

I *kinda* suspect the steering rack, but the symptoms don't really "fit" There is no whining or binding, but the overall looseness DOES feel like my old 740 with a bad rack. I've been told struts can cause pull. My 240 with bad front struts just bounced a lot - didn't pull.

I'm not sure what to try next, but my cash reserves are running out.

Incidentally, I've run magnafine filters on the power steering and tranny fluid for the last five years.

Any ideas?
