AW70/71 vs M47 200

I've been trying to find a '89/93 240 wagon for several weeks and wanted manual tranny with overdrive. I didn't realize that starting in '87 I think, Volvo didn't offer the M46 in the stock 240. It was either the M47 or AW70. I have had some Volvo mechanics tell me that the M47 was a weak transmission in that 5th gear was not supported and couldn't do much work, far less than the overdrive unit in the M46. Is that true? Now I've got to decide which is better-the automatic or the 5-speed. I do not drive fast or hard. I'm a 72 year old cruiser. I do like to have the flexibility of changing gears, but if it's a weak tranny, maybe I should get the automatic. I'm really in a quandary here, with two I have to make a decision on in the next two days. Feel sort of stupid not realizing this before.
thanks for the advice
Jim
