rough running engine 444-544

This may be lengthy-stay with me. Bought this project with a fresh overhauled engine-even balanced. Completed ALL the running gear, dis-assembled the bottom end of the engine and ALL clearances were excellent. P/O told me top end was rebuilt by professional mechanic-and all evidence indicates that. Installed twin HU-6's (rebuilt by Barongray)and engine started right up, but had a severe miss-ran a LITTLE better at higher RPM's. Installed different distributer (from David Zipkin), new points, condenser, rotor, dist. cap, plugs, wires, coil. Checked valve adjustments, point gap. Thought perhaps vacumn leak, but couldn't find one. Rebuilt a Weber 2 bbl and installed that--same problem. Checked compression-150psi on all 4 cylinders. have checked firing order and proper placement of wires in the dist. cap. I checked that all the valves are opening and closing- Looks good. I put a timing light on each plug wire, and they are all firing. I'll try to answer any questions.
I am at my wits end--any suggestions appreciated.
