Rod bearings in a B20 120-130

Do any of you experienced engine rebuilders out there have an opinion about this? I'm putting together a '69' B20 and in looking around for new rod bearings I have noticed that they came in two widths, early style at 27mm and late style at 24mm. Is it possible to use the narrow style in an early engine that had the wider bearings? Would it just plain be a bad idea? The difference isn't much. What was Volvo thinking to change the width like that. Are the later cranks different and had narrower journals?
