red light stays on 444-544

Recently the red light came on. The belt had stretched beyond what I could adjust. I replaced it. The Gates belt only had 7000 miles on it. The red light stays on. The generator was rebuilt by a reputable shop 7000 miles ago. It was suggested that since I removed the generator I might need to polarize it. Never having done this I researched it on the internet. Never have I found a subject with so many different instructions. What is the correct way to do this? What should I look for? The only time I have seen the light come on in the past 7000 miles is when the idle was low. Thanks, Bob, 1965 PV544
