engine noise -- rattling knock sound at idle. 200 1978

78 245 DL. b21f. 300,000+ miles. engine developed an intermittent rattling knock while driving home today. sounds like a wrench being knocked around an empty tool box. you can only hear it when coming to a stop, or when idling warm; the sound goes away while accelerating and/or driving faster than 10mph.

no noticeable change in performance. oil was recently changed and looks fine. all fluids fine. doesn't sound like an exhaust leak, though the catalytic converter was replaced two weeks ago after it was stolen. (yes, stolen.)

any thoughts? most of the internet claims "piston slap" or "rod knock". busted wrist pin maybe?
