spacer under distributor? 120-130 1966

Reading Ron K's website about distributor repair, I see that my rotor is not supposed to turn by hand to the right. Clockwise. That indicates that I need to check the centrifugal advance, cause something is wrong. Well, mine did turn that way, so I took out the dis and cleaned and lubed it. Put it back in, the slop remains. Turns out that all the looseness in turning the rotor clockwise, is coming from outside the distributor, not the CA. Because the drive gear underneath, when you turn the rotor clockwise, the drive gear climbs up toward the distributor. Is there supposed to be a spacer between that drive gear and the bottom of the distributor?
