1989 245 GL auto OD was working when it felt like it, now gone...help please 200

I tried to fix a problem with my overdrive being finicky. It would work most days, but, only after getting the tranny warmed up a bit and flooring it once or twice would it work. After it engaged the first time for the trip it would work properly from then on. The other day, no go. Don't care what I did, it was not going to work. My lovely Bride drove it the next day, and it worked without a hitch.

I decided to go the way of simplicity and ordered a block off plate from IPD. Installed it without any problem, and guess what? No overdrive. I played with the kick down cable for a while, made sure the fluid was full, drove it nicely, flogged it, nothing doin'. What am I missing? I didn't make any huge adjustments to the cable, and ended up putting it back where I found it. I cleaned the area around the mounting point of the plate before installing it. Could some dirt have gotten in there and plugged it? If so, is it possible to clean it out by dropping the pan and getting to the passage from the bottom of the car? Is there a better way?
