740 trunk struts are working a little too well 700

I need help with a liftgate issue, which is not a standard strut replacement. My google-fu is extremely weak on this one. The car is an '87 745

I've heard all about trunks falling on people's heads. Different issue here - my trunk struts won't let the trunk open more than a few inches. The struts are basically new, they were replaced in October and worked fine until April.

Sometimes I'm able to get the trunk to open very slowly. I can't force it to open any faster. If I open it very slowly, then close it, I can't open it again beyond a few inches.

The strut brand I have is Monroe Max-Lift. If that helps.

Before I resort to trashing the struts and using a broomstick to keep my trunk open, what should I try?

Thanks
Dan
