A/C Conversion - What to Do? 200 1990

I have a nice, great running 1990 240 sedan which I have to prepare for duty in Nevada. The problem is, of course, the A/C stopped working. I've talked to a couple independent shops (unfortunately, none with 240 experience) and I am getting mixed reviews of what to do - everything from just charge it up with R134a to forget it.

TASCA has the 240 conversion kit (P/N 9134808-6) for $600, but I can see this going over the $1K mark especially when farming out the portion of the work which I'm not tooled-up for.

Does anyone who has gone down this DIY road full of potholes have any suggestions?

Above all else, I want the a/c to work without any glitches because I'm sending my son off in this car on his first one-way, solo flight.

Thanks, one and all,

Rich
