Programming remote entry fob 900 1995

Hi
I bought two fobs and have tried to programme them as per the instructions (5 X on off, on on the 5th).
But I can't get them programmed. I know the fobs both work because I can hear the click when you press the buttons and they were working for the guy I bought them from.
My old fob works fine.

Is there a special trick to this? I sit in the car with all the doors and truck closed when I atempt the programming but the red light on the dash just doesn't come on. Should I have locked the doors with the old fob first (locked myself inside the car) and then do the 5x on/off thing?
Any help would be appreciated
