Should fuel pressure be at 28PSI at all times? 140-160

I'm curious if my fuel pressure should remain a constant 28psi on my '72 144E. I have an in-line gauge attached and it usually reads 28-30PSI while the car is idling or just after it is shut down. But today I went for a spirited ride for about 50 miles, decided to pop the hood right after I got home and I was surprised to see the gauge reading 40PSI. Cause for concern?
