Interior Heat Exchanger 120-130

Hi All! Could use some knowledge on working on my .... I'll call it my heat exchanger! it sits right behind the gear shifter. From the thermostat there is a copper wire running right into the heat exchanger box (thru the seam that seperates the exchanger front to back) This copper wire is run forward towards the engine and seems to prevent the flap inside the exchanger from closing all the way. Is this where its supposed to go? I have tried taking it out but did not want to use much force not knowing if it was attached to something inside the exchanger, and not knowing how far it reaches inside. Also, it looks like I need to rig up something for the drain tube( rear bottom of the exchanger ) there is about a half inch gap between the drain tube and exchager housing. I'm thinking a small section rubber tubing and some silicone. Also! the thermostat itself seems very cruddy, should I attempt to take this off and clean it or leave it be? Thanks so much!
