wheel bearing noise prior to failure - a data point 200 1993

A few years ago I had a wheel bearing fail on my wife's 240. It went from being silent to a noisy crunching noise almost overnight. It was the right side front bearing and made the loud noise first when turning right. It was a no brainer. When I removed the hub the inner bearing was in pieces.

This time it was a faint, slightly metallic sound in my 240 that almost sounded like slightly amplified tire-on-road noise. It seemed to disappear or decrease in volume after driving for awhile. I was also getting a little up and down steering wheel wobble when braking. I checked wheel play and found little or none. Over the course of a few weeks I tried to listen for changes in volume or tone. Eventually I noticed the noise was definitely louder when turning left and decided to replace the bearing. When I opened up the hub I noticed the grease looked burned on the inner bearing and smelled that way too. It looks like the inner seal was comprimised allowing dirt or moisture in. Both bearings "looked" OK to my untrained eye, but I replaced with new and now the noise is gone. I still have a little steering wheel wobble on braking - I might be due for outer tie rods.
