Speedo and Service Lt.cutting in and out 200 1990

I have a 1990 240 wagon that has a intermettent problem with the speedometer,it sometimes works fine but often lately it will just drop and not work for any given amount of time and then it will just pop back up and work for a while.At the exact second of failure or recovery there will be a quick blink of the service light on the left side of the warning light panel.I have checked the connection at the rear differential,the contacts are clean and the wires look good.I wonder if this could have something to do with the service light/milage counter indicating that its time for an oil change maybe malfunctioning?
Any thoughts?
