You could use a second cable from the engine block to the body.A ford type solenoid to starter cable would work well.

If the insulation on your battery cables crumbled,it would likely be covered under a safety recall by any Volvo dealer.I recently had an '88 done at no charge,as recalls never expire,no matter how many owners or miles.
