*bows to the 240 gurus* Is this a simple alternator issue? 200 1988

I come to you on bended knee. I'm hoping you guys can easily diagnose my issue. Here's the complete story, as best I can tell it:

Bought a used '88 240 from a college age chick. It was clean and on my test drive it ran well. I was notified of a bad fuel pump relay and that they had put in a new alternator. I went ahead and got a new battery, and obviously install the new fuel pump relay, tested the fuel pumps by jumping them, etc.

But here's what happened ~today~!. I just got her registered and took her out for some trial runs. I was out for 2+ hours joyriding, went down suburban streets, sat in stop and go traffic, went on the parkway, went up a few hills, etc. I came home and was 100% pleased with the car's performance. About an hour later, a 7pm this evening I took the car out again to get some food, and at first I noticed the stereo flickering. (Note: This was the first time during the day I put the lights on.) It also began to poor very hard. Then I could feel small clues that the car wasn't running right. Then the speedo began to have a seizure while at idle, jumping from 0 to 5-10. I luckily got off the main road and was very close to my own house so I pulled it to the curb and turned off everything, then tried to start it. The service light blinked, and overdrive light blinked with clicking.

About two hours later here, my friend came by and we went to jump the car. It started right up without a jump. Went about five blocks, and then died again. Jumped. Started right up, went about another 5-7 blocks (luckily to my house) and then died while pulling in the driveway.

Any ideas as to what this could be, and why it didn't happen during the extended driving I did earlier, in various conditions? Again, the previous owner and her family put in a "new" alternator - you can tell its' new by looking at is cosmietically, but what do you think could be causing this issue, as far as a faulty installation goes? Or if you think it's something else...

Thanks so much for you help. This forum has been invaluable to me in the past and in recent history. Cheers.
